With time on hand and not a single tourist in sight, our on location reporter, Phil visited the marinas, the piers, jetties and beaches in and around Puerto Vallarta in search of an interesting beach fishing story for the month of September. The regulars at Los Muertos Pier welcomed Phil but told him that the rains brought in muddy water and no one was doing any fishing at this time. Phil heard that the sardines were on the shore at Punta Negra to the south and he planned a morning of surfcasting but during the night, the surf built up and there was no beach left to cast from, let alone sardines. |

After a few days of cruising the local areas Phil discovered that the hot fishing from the beach was at Mahaujas. This is a beautiful and isolated beach that is westward from the town of Tomatlan, which is located to the south of Puerto Vallarta. It is a bit tricky to find but when you reach this area, you will be happy that you made the effort. The drive is along banana plantations and you may even see some rice fields. |

The rainy season is not actually the best time to visit Mahaujas because you may need to hire a panga to get you across the lagoon to the mouth of the river, but with a bit of effort, this is a wonderful experience. The report is that Robalo, Jacks, Sharks, Pargo and other species, big ones, are there for you to catch. There are no organized charters to this area, it is still a remote wonderland but if you are willing to bring your own gear, rent a jeep and try to find this area then you are in the top .02 percentile of the tourist population who really know how to make the best of their vacation. |
